Community Snapshot: Melbourne Beach

Discover the first real beach community in Florida! Melbourne Beach has long been celebrated as the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon landed here on April 2, 1513. A state historical marker marks the site. In the late 1800’s pineapple farms were plentiful and a pier, identical to the present day one was constructed and a railroad soon ran the length of Ocean Avenue and out onto the pier. The old bathhouse was constructed where the Sands Restaurant now stands.

Today this beach town is home to the one of Florida’s natural thrills. The Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge is home to the largest sea turtle (Loggerhead, Leatherback and Green sea turtles) nesting area in the United States. Experience these beautiful creatures on a Turtle Walk with The Sea Turtle Preservation Society during nesting season. Visit the Barrier Island Center for educational experiences through display panels, interactive areas and live exhibits perfect for all ages.

If you’re looking for hands on adventure, spend your day with SUP Eco Adventures or saltwater fishing at the Sebastian Inlet State Park for shark, Redfish, Snook, Blue Fish, Jacks and Tarpin…just to name a few! Paddle boarding, kayaking, surfing, bike riding and exploring nature trails aren’t the only ways to enjoy Melbourne Beach. Relax on the golden sands, in your favorite attire from the Longboard House, a comfy beach chair and a cool drink or take in a game of golf at the Aquarina Beach and Country Club or Spessard Holland Golf Course.

Melbourne Beach’s restaurants offer a wide range of cuisine and atmosphere. Breakfast, lunch or early dinner at Billie’s on the Beach, beachside dining at Sand on the Beach, riverside and sunset dining at Café Coconut Cove and the full piano bar in Djon’s Steak & Lobster House.

Imagine drawing your days to a close at the Historic Ryckman Park as sunsets transform the sky into a beautiful work of art. Melbourne Beach is a city that is proud of it’s heritage and embraces a small beach town feel!
